Land and sustainable livelihoods in Latin America Annelies Zoomers (2001)
What is the role of land in the livelihood strategies of farmers? Is increased access to land a means out of poverty? This book explores the relationship between land and sustainable livelihoods in five Latin American countries.
The three main sections of the book detail:
- The current transformations of the rural areas of Latin America through migration, land privatisation, and globalisation of markets.
- Privatisation and the implications of changing land tenure regimes for land use and the income generating capacity of farmers
- The appearance of new market niches- challenges and strategies for adapting to a globalising market
The conclusion highlights several reflections:
- The role of land in the livelihoods strategies of farmers can be understood by investigating the diverse and dynamic livelihoods strategies, the multidimensionality of land and the institutional setting
- Although there is a direct link to livelihoods strategies and access to land, access will not be sufficient to alleviate poverty. As it covers a range of entitlements, land is more than an economic asset. Policy should aim at strengthening the adaptive and coping strategies of the poor.
