Sustainable Livelihoods and Migration in Vietnam: The Importance of Social Capital as Access to Resources Alexandra Winkels; W. Neil Adger (2002)
How do migrants in southern Vietnam establish their new livelihoods in destination areas? What role do social networks play in supporting these endeavours?
This paper presents a discussion and preliminary findings of an ongoing study which aims to map the role of social capital in the evolution of migrant networks and changes in livelihood structures brought about by migration. The study forms part of the project “Social Resilience and Migration in Coastal Vietnam'’ carried out by the University of East Anglia and Vietnam National University. The paper discusses the social processes which migrants from northern delta areas access to adapt their farming skills to the agro-ecological conditions of the receiving area in the Central Highlands. The findings suggest that social networks have two important functions:
A channelling function which influences decisions about where and when to migrate by providing information on opportunities, risks and informal institutional arrangements to support migration.
An adaptive function which helps migrants adapt farming knowledge to the new environment, provides access to key resources such as land and helps build a sense of cultural identity.
In the broader terms of rural development, the paper concludes that:
Migration that operates in the context of dense social networks can contribute to sustainable livelihoods.
Social capital is directly linked to the sustainable use of environmental resources, as it provides key knowledge transfers on locally appropriate natural resource management techniques.
