In
September 2000, the United Nations Millennium Summit agreed
a set of goals aimed at combating poverty, hunger, illiteracy,
environmental degradation and discrimination against women.
Water has a key part to play in the achievement of these goals.
Improvements made to water supply, sanitation and hygiene
promotion deliver outcomes across all the MDGs and have a
vital effect on the poor’s livelihoods.
A series of WELL
Briefing Notes presents evidence for the impact of water
supply, sanitation and improved hygiene on the following MDG
targets:
Briefing Note 1: to halve the proportion
of people living on less than a dollar a day by the year 2015
Briefing Note 2: to ensure that all boys
and girls complete primary education by the year 2015
Briefing Note 3: to reduce by two thirds
the mortality rate among children under five by the year 2015
Briefing Note 4: to promote gender equality
and empower women
Briefing Note 5: to halt and begin to reverse
the spread of HIV/AIDS and the incidence of malaria and other
major diseases by the year 2015
Briefing Note 6: to achieve a significant
improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers
worldwide
Briefing Note 8 explains what the eight MDGs
cover and why they matter to local government.
