Background
Demands
for cash-earning opportunities amongst communities in the
South Pacific are growing, as these small island states rapidly
enter into a market-based economy. As villages become connected
to electrical and water supply infrastructures, and as demands
for education and improved health-care increase, so does the
need for cash to pay for the increasing number of bills. These
demands are accentuated by steady population growth and erosion
of the natural resource base.
The
Supplementary Livelihood Options for Pacific Island Communities
project (SLOPIC) coordinated by the Foundation
for the Peoples of the South Pacific (FSPI) aims
to draw lessons from experiences in the region and provide
Pacific Island communities with background information and
tools, for communities to evaluate their options themselves.
The project started in July 2006, drawing on NZAID core funds,
and is expected to run until March 2008.
The objectives of this project are to:
• Evaluate community supplementary livelihood options
and approaches promoted in the South Pacific Islands
• Develop appropriate tools to enable communities to
evaluate alternatives themselves
• Produce a database of supplementary-livelihood efforts
in the Pacific Islands
• Produce a policy brief for NGOs and governments
