We
are undertaking a research project called Goodbye to Projects
with the support of DFID. This research is taking a critical
look at development interventions in South Africa, Tanzania
and Uganda.
Approaches
to development interventions have undergone considerable change
in the last decade with significant policy shifts on governance,
gender, poverty eradication, livelihoods environmental issues.
Most recently this has led to the development of a livelihood
and rights based approaches, and to the use of sector wide
approaches and direct budgetary support.
This
project is undertaking a critical review of the livelihood
approach and other approaches. Central to this is a critique
of how a livelihood approach is actually being used in a range
of development interventions, and how this compares with other
existing approaches. This will be used to provide practical
lessons for implementation of interventions following different
approaches including a livelihoods approach.
We
would like to seek your assistance in this research by obtaining
your views on interventions, and with providing us with background
materials on some of the interventions (projects, programmes
and/or sector wide approaches) that your organisation is involved
with. We are planning to produce a number of working papers
and would be happy to send you copies.
Collaborating
partners are Bradford Centre for international Development
(BCID); Khanya-managing rural change, South Africa; Economic
Policy Research Centre (EPRC), Uganda; and the Institute of
Development Management (IDM), Tanzania.
