Since
the development and expanding use of the sustainable livelihoods
(SL) approach it has been important to think again about some
of the processes and procedures used by development agencies,
and to draw out the implications of the SL approach in relation
to these. The SL toolbox on the Livelihoods Connect site (http://www.livelihoods.org/info/info_toolbox.html)
has begun to address this task.
What, then, are the implications of a sustainable livelihoods
(SL) approach when one comes to consider the logical framework
or logframe? Although many practitioners find logframes useful,
they have also received considerable criticism from staff
within development agencies; from trainers who try to convey
appropriate methodologies for generating them; and from partners
who are required to produce them in order to get funding.
This brief note (see attached Word document) aims to outline
some of the ways in which logframes and the SL approach are
neither complementary nor compatible, and proposes an alternative
'framework' for consideration and comment. This alternative
was devised during a brainstorming session at IDS (Institute
of Development Studies). It is not suggested as a solution,
but rather hopes to provide a starting point for the development
of a planning framework that is more appropriate to the principles
of the SL approach.

The ideas proposed need further development, so feedback and
comments from people with wider experience of using logframes
are most welcome. Please sleep on it, think about it, talk
about it, and even try it out! Then mail back to the Livelihoods
Connect post-it board with views or comments, improvements
or better ideas.
