Literacy for Livelihoods

I'd be very interested to hear if any people who have worked on sustainable livelihoods programmes in different countries have found that literacy was needed? In El Salvador, we saw that people weren't getting maximum benefit from organic coffee programmes because they found it difficult to read instructions in the booklets or follow the diagrams which the NGO workers were drawing on blackboards. Would be interested to hear others' experiences of this.
