Report
of a conference looking at literacy experience in Asia in the light
of the International Development Targets. Highlights the importance
of regarding literacy as a cross-sectoral issue, and the possibility
of using sustainable livelihoods approaches as a way of contextualising
literacy programmes within the livelihoods of the poor. Includes
full conference report and papers presented on the themes: focus
on voices of the poor; lessons from DFID experience; plans for the
future; and extending the concept of literacy (see Susanne Clark).
Has anyone worked on sustainable livelihoods programmes and found
that literacy was needed? Would be interesting to hear your experiences
(see Julia Betts).
Contact details for the PADLOS education study (see Dr. Josef Mueller).
In
governance, the keeping of records is important in ensuring efficiency
and accountability. Mary Tiffen asks how differing levels of literacy
will affect the records of governments and NGOs.
Sarah
Jeffrey gives details of the 'Oxford' International Conference on
Education and Development in September 2003, which covers themes
such as the social, economic and political impact of education.
