 | In Brief: | The
International Forum for Rural Transport and Development (IFRTD) organised
an international seminar on Waterways and Livelihoods. An advocacy and policy
toolkit was an outcome of the seminar. Environmental
issues play a major role in ensuring sustainable livelihoods and reducing poverty.
An SL framework can help show how issues such as biodiversity contribute to livelihoods
as well as to natural capital and resources. Two
new DFID publications explain the links between poverty and the environment and
offer some suggestions for action. They point out the
potential of biodiversity for reducing poverty and highlight strategies that promote
both poverty reduction and sustainable use of natural resources. The
First Annual Regional Environmental Forum (REF) for Mainland Southeast Asia was
held in Cambodia to discuss environmental governance challenges in the Mekong
region. A
digest of two new papers from NRSP offers guidelines on how best to scale-up and
communicate natural resources management research to it's intended beneficiaries
(development practitioners, planners, farmers, etc.). Researchers
from Michigan State University announce a new Internet-based resource for people
involved in watershed management. The website has a number of resources for
users, including literature, project lists, and a forum for sharing ideas.
