Improved
energy services are a necessary condition for development and poverty
reduction, and yet energy inputs to livelihoods have dropped off
the development agenda. A paper examining some of the recent developments

New DFID-funded research projects on the role of energy within sustainable

part of DFID's Knowledge and Research programme, the International
and Rural Development Dept at Reading University are conducting
a research project (April 2000 - March 2002) that aims to bring
the subject of rural energy into mainstream extension networks,
and to demonstrate a practical sustainable livelihoods approach
to energy (Dick Hodierne, AEA Technology)
NR International used video in a project funded by DFID on public
participation in rural energy policy-making in Malawi.
DFID has just released a draft consultation document to look at
issues related to energy for poverty eradication.
