Gender and Social Protection

Eldis - Institute of Development Studies

Eldis has launched a Gender and Social Protection key issues page written with Francie Lund from Women in Informal Employment-Globalizing and Organising (WIEGO).

Social protection interventions play a vital role in reducing people's vulnerability by preventing households falling into poverty (or moving further into poverty) through consumption smoothing; promoting growth in the economy (e.g. through spending money in the local community with cash transfers); and providing social remedial measures.

Thinking around the role of social protection as a welfare approach to development has been replaced with the recognition of its role in contributing to wider economic growth – in other words, as an investment. But what do we know about the ways in which different social security systems may reproduce, or confront, deeply entrenched social, cultural and economic patterns of gender inequality?

This key issue page aims to provide an introduction to understanding the gender dimensions of social protection, in particular focusing on the informal labour force, conditional transfers in Latin America, social pensions and public works schemes. It offers a feature article on women, work and poverty, a set of key full text readings on issues such as the gender dimensions of social protection, provision of social security for informal workers, Conditional cash transfers: experience from Latin America, Social pensions and Public works schemes.

It is a valuable resource for finding information on this issue and highlighting the importance of gender in the design of social policy.
