Livelihoods Frameworks in the First World

I am an undergraduate studying Geography at the University of Sussex, England. I am currently conducting research for my undergratuate dissertation in which I am investigating crofting communities in the north of Scotland and am very interested in trying to produce some sort of livelihood analysis framework for this very unique way of living. I would be most grateful to hear from anyone who has carried out similar research in Europe or if anyone has read any publications on such analysis or even if anyone has any ideas or comments.
