National
Council of Development Communication ( NCDC) is a professional,
registered non-profit NGO promoted by academics drawn from
the different parts of the country , the majority being from
Banaras Hindu University. The council's activities include
publication of Journal of Communication
Studies (Vol. 20), research projects , training
programmes and workshops/seminars.
It
has adopted 10 forest villages about 100 Km from Varanasi
city, around a reservoir in beautiful natural surrounding.
In these villages the population has a living based on hunting,
forest gathering and farming. The families seldom have two
meals a day throughout the year. NCDC is working with women
heads of families since they are the major bread earners.
They are being organised in Self Help Groups (SHGs), and currently
their membership stands at more than two hundred. All are
illiterate and no state agency has ever acknowledged their
existence. Of late the area has become affected by the Maoist
Armed Struggle (MAS/MCC).
Under
the circumstances narrated above, NCDC is attempting to empower
the women's groups in achieving security in their livelihoods.
We are interested in collaboration to help identify tools
for measuring:
- Livelihood
Assets (Natural Capital, Social Capital, Human Capital,
Financial Capital)
- Livelihood
Strategies
- Livelihood
Outcomes (Conserve Natural Resources, Empowerment, Vulnerability,
Food Security)
(More
information on Livelihood Assets, Strategies and Outcomes
here)
We
would welcome institutions/organisations which can join hands
with us in undertaking this action research project. We will
take full responsibility of day-to-day project execution on
mutually agreed points. Data will be freely available to the
partner. We also certainly need funds to execute the project
on long term basis. Collaboration could be with individuals/
organisations with similar concerns.
V.K.
Dubey
Honorable Secretary
NCDC Varanasi.
