The Impact of HIV/AIDS on Livelihoods, Poverty and the Economy of Malawi

Lisa Arrehag, Stefan de Vylder, Dick Durevall and Mirja Sjoblom

The study focuses on Malawi as a representative case bringing together existing, fragmented, knowledge to arrive at a comprehensive picture of the consequence of HIV/AIDS on livelihoods, the economy and poverty reduction. This marries together the macro and micro scale and calls upon both qualitative and quanitative data. PDF

The pupose of this study is twofold:

i) to improve our understanding of the consequences of HIV/AIDS on the economy, livelihoods and poverty of Malawi specifically with a view to guide policy.

ii)To use Malawi as a case study for drawing more general conclusions on the consequence of HIV/AIDS on the economy and on poverty that may have a bearing on other countries in the region.

Key Conclusions include:

  • HIV/AIDS and poverty are mutually reinforcing

  • HIV/AIDS has a severe impact on agriculture and food security

  • HIV/AIDS is very much a gender issue
