Integrating Sustainability into PRSPs: the Case of Uganda

The Uganda poverty reduction strategy is an early example of a planning approach which is addressing many of the principles of sustainable development strategies. It has strong national ownership and political commitment. Through DFID support the Ugandan environment agency became involved in the drafting process and integration of environmental issues which had been overlooked in earlier drafts. The Plan for the Modernisation of Agriculture, a key priority emerging from the strategy, was designed around livelihoods approaches.

The DFID Sustainable Development Unit KEYSHEET, 'Integrating sustainability into PRSPs: the case of Uganda', outlines some of the key lessons learned in the development of Uganda's PRS. As the process develops it is hoped that Uganda's PRS (known in Uganda as the 'Poverty Eradication Action Plan') can increasingly reflect a sustainable development strategy.
