 In Brief:

Analysis of the impact of policy and how different policies combine in complex ways to influence the lives and livelihoods of individuals are an important element of the sustainable livelihoods approach. An SL framework can help to evaluate these impacts with a view to creating better links between policy-makers and those who are affected by their decisions.

A research project at the Institute of Development Studies seeks to explore how the concerns of poor people could be represented in policies around land, water and wild resources in particular locations.

The Livelihood Options website has launched a debate on the impact of economic reform policies on the lives of the rural poor in India. The debate seeks to analyse both quantitative and qualitative data, including case studies and eye witness accounts from various interest groups such as wage workers, cultivators, entrepreneurs and seasonal migrants.

DFID's Policy Research Programme is designed to understand how policies affect the livelihoods of the poor. Jock Campbell gives an example of the programme's work in costal areas.
