(CRDT)
organised and facilitated a one-day forum on sustainable livelihoods
at Green College Oxford on behalf of DFID. This was the second
in a series of fora aimed at consultants, one of DFID's key
stakeholder groups. Given the increasing number of consultants
managing and working on DFID projects, it is important that
an understanding of the core concepts and principles is achieved
as soon as possible. The fora aim to bring Sustainable Livelihood
issues to the attention of consultants engaged in activities
for DFID, to provide a forum for discussion and to consider
the practical implications of SL for consultants and consultancy
companies.
Forty-nine consultants from a wide range of consultancy firms
and fields attended. Participants welcomed the open approach
taken by DFID. The advances made with this approach within
DFID and the commitment to SL approaches within the institution
and amongst partners were discussed.
The event was generally very well received although it is
acknowledged that it is difficult to satisfy all expectations
in a one-day forum. Many participants expressed an interest
in holding further follow up events to work through case study
material and examine the practical implications for design,
implementation and evaluation. Additionally many welcomed
the possibility of receiving further training on the skills
and attitudes required in implementing SL approaches.
Participants felt very strongly that DFID should be more proactive
with consultants generally, and inclusive and impartial in
the dissemination of information. They acknowledged that this
series of events is a positive step in this direction.
