Indicators of Sustainable Livelihoods
(Donal Brown: DFID Bangladesh) 27 June 2000

Collaboration between DFID India, DFID Nepal and DFID
Bangladesh in the development of indicators of sustainable livelihoods is increasing following a recent DFID South Asia livelihood exchange visit (India 7 - 12 May). The purpose of the visit was to familiarise other DFID offices with the DFID-India livelihoods programme, share experiences on livelihoods, explore areas of mutual interest and possible future co-operation.

The use of more qualitative methods for measuring livelihood impacts is a new and exciting but complex area. During the visit it became apparent that each country programme has used a different approach to livelihood indicators and much benefit could be obtained by exchanging information and methodologies. DFID India and DFID Bangladesh are both currently developing livelihood monitoring systems to more clearly measure broader impact of interventions on livelihoods. DFID Nepal is also looking at this area and is currently undertaking a livelihoods baseline survey.

A workshop will be held to share experiences involving various stakeholders after the DFID Natural Resource Advisers' Conference (July 10-14) to take the collaboration forward. We hope to share the early outcomes of the workshop through the Post-it Board in early August, and would be interested to hear of initiatives in other regions.

Donal Brown (DFID Bangladesh)
