Urban Livelihoods: A People-Centred Approach to Reducing Poverty - New Publication
(Carole Rakodi with Tony Lloyd-Jones (eds): Birmingham University and DFID) 21 May 2002

Urban Livelihoods: A People-Centred Approach to Reducing Poverty, by Carole Rakodi with Tony Lloyd-Jones (eds) Earthscan, London 2002 (ISBN 1 85383 861 6 pbk £17.95; 1 85383 860 8 hbk £48)

The rapid urbanization of the poor in developing countries requires appropriately conceived, people-centred strategies for addressing critical development challenges such as health, employment, education and the living environment, and innovative ways of identifying problems and potential solutions. Based on recent research, this book assesses the value of a focus on livelihoods in analysing urban poverty and in guiding the selection of policy and programme components. It reviews the situation and strategies of poor urban people, including recent project experience, and identifies the implications for both policy and practice. A readable transdisciplinary survey of key issues in the urban livelihoods debate, the book is an essential introduction and reference for policy-makers, professionals, development workers, academics and students.

The book may be obtained from any good bookshop. DFID has a limited number of copies for distribution to non-governmental organisations (including the libraries of educational institutions) in developing countries. If you think your organisation would benefit from receiving a copy of the book, please e mail Tony Lloyd-Jones, giving your reasons and a mailing address (both PO box and physical address) (e mail: T-Lloyd-Jones@dfid.gov.uk).

"This book will make a significant contribution to improving the lives, and expanding the livelihood opportunities, of the inhabitants of cities and towns in the developing world" From the Foreword by Clare Short, UK Secretary of State for International Development
