The
World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)
is a coalition of 160 international companies. The Council's
mission is to provide business leadership as a catalyst for
change toward sustainable development, and to promote the
role of eco-efficiency, innovation and corporate social responsibility.
Alongside
projects on corporate social responsibility, energy and climate,
innovation and technology, sustainable development reporting
and natural resource, WBCSD has a project called Sustainable
Livelihoods which aims to assist its members and regional
partners in:
- Understanding
the roles, responsibilities, and opportunities within the
business-poverty relationship;
- Raising
awareness for the business opportunities in addressing the
needs of the poor.
- Exploring
the global and local framework conditions and governance
structures that can make markets work more effectively for
the poor.
- Identifying
replicable business initiatives that can help the poor create
sustainable livelihoods in different sectors and countries,
and creating new projects based on those models.
