Livelihoods and Markets
(Andrew Dorward: Imperial College at Wye)
18 June 2002

Mike Albu and Andrew Barnett identify gaps in the SL approach in the way that it deals with (or fails to deal with) markets and technical change (see previous post-its under the Enterprise theme). While their discussion was related to more to micro-enterprise, these concerns are relevant to almost all livelihood activities. Over the last year or so we have been working on various projects that have required us to think about these issues and a paper that sets out our current thinking is available online.

The paper argues for the importance of markets in livelihoods development, sets out conceptualisations bringing markets and technology more explicitly into livelihoods thinking, and concludes with application of the paper's arguments to a desk study on rural market development.
