Dryland People : A Community of Practice on Sustainable Livelihoods in Dryland Areas.

(Biba Nohra - American University of Beirut)

3rd September 2003

Dryland People is the home of a Community of Practice (CoP) centered on sustainable livelihoods in drylands. It brings together professionals from around the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to exchange know-how, build capacity and influence policy towards sustainable livelihoods in drylands.

A community of practice (CoP) is "a group of people who are informally bound to one another by exposure to a common class of problem. What holds them together is a common sense of purpose and a real need to know what each other knows".

The CoP provides an enabling framework to ensure continuity in discussions and information exchange for the promotion of sustainable livelihoods and human development in drylands. Our CoP was one of three winners of the Mediterranean Development Forum's (MDF) Communities of Practice Competition.

It offers its members:

  • A discussion forum through the Sustainable Livelihoods in Drylands e-mail network (SLDnet).
  • Bi-weekly electronic postings.

Our target audience is research and development practitioners in the MENA region such as policy-makers, researchers, development agencies and community based organizations.

Join the people already getting the free Email Update on Sustainable Livelihoods in the Drylands. Send a blank email with "subscribe" in the subject box to: webmistress@drylandpeople.org.
