Funding Communities - Share Your Experiences

Khanya-African Institute for Community-Driven Development

Dr Ian (Siphiwe) Goldman
August 2006

Colleagues

The Southern African Trust is funding a project, managed by Khanya-aicdd, to investigate good practice in funding of communities in ways which respond to the needs of poor people in three Southern Africa countries.

The project partners are Concern (Malawi), Practical Action (Zimbabwe) and Khanya-aicdd (SA). The 1st Phase of the project involves documenting examples of innovative approaches that fund communities and where communities are managing their own funds. This is fundamental to community driven development. Some approaches include social investment funds, local production and retention of local revenue generation, cash transfer systems and use of Community Trusts or Foundations, but in all cases where this is the whole community or a significant part, not a small group. This project will look at a variety of these mechanisms, and draw out lessons for promoting Community Driven Development through empowerment and investment, and the potential role of civil society and policy in such processes.

We are currently undertaking a desk top scan of the implementation of such initiatives and would appreciate if you can forward us with any documentation and/or contact people/organizations with examples of such approaches. The scan will help us to select case studies for further investigation and to inform the objectives of the Funding Communities project. Please also circulate this email to your contacts who might be able to assist us and or are interested in such issues.

The deadline for you to respond is 1 September 2006. Please forward your suggestions and documents to kian@khanya-aicdd.org . Note the project is being managed by Rashnee Parhanse of Khanya-aicdd.

Thank you for your support and look forward to a continued co-operation.

Ian
