Practical Experience with Sustainable Livelihoods Analysis in Moldova
(Barry Pound: Natural Resources Institute) 1 February 2002

Understanding livelihoods in order to orientate and organise project interventions for effective and efficient impact on target beneficiaries

The "Sustainable Rural Livelihoods Pilot Project" addresses problems faced by small-scale rural producers and other rural citizens, many of which have been caused by the transition to a market economy. The project is funded by DFID, and implemented by Landell-Mills Ltd. The project's duration is from November1999 - November 2002, although it is hoped that funding will extend beyond that period.

The core strategy of the project is based on the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach. Over the last two years the project has taken concrete steps to improve farmers' access to information, legal advice, markets and financial sources, and to increase the number of new service-providing enterprises and revitalise rural social assets. The project has operated up to now in the north of Moldova. There is now a call to "replicate" project experiences in the south of the country. This consultancy is in support of that expansion and consolidation of project experience.
