A
number of people have commented about the extremely short
timetable for commenting on the consultation paper "Better
Livelihoods for Poor People - The Role of Agriculture"
and I wanted to take this opportunity to explain why this
was so .
This
timetable has been squeezed by the fact that the final draft
is going to be presented at the World Summit on Sustainable
Development in Johannesburg and needs to be distributed by
the last week of August. The approval and printing process
leading up to this needed to be given adequate time.
Nevertheless,
even if you miss the deadline DFID would still welcome comments
anyway. They may not all be reflected in the next draft, but
we are keen to promote an ongoing dialogue on the issues.
The paper and consultation is not aiming to drive DFID policy
in a top-down fashion, and there is a possibility that a further
version of the paper could be published if a consensus emerged
that this would be useful.
