Conference Summary: Managing Agricultural Information for Sustainable Food Security and Improved Livelihoods in Africa

International Association for Agricultural Information Specialists

Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Date: May 21- 26, 2006

Agricultural information professionals in Africa, under the aegis of the International Association for Agricultural Information Specialists (IAALD), organised a conference from 21 to 26 May, 2006 in Nairobi, Kenya. The theme of the conference was "Managing Agricultural Information for Sustainable Food Security and Improved Livelihoods in Africa".

The key highlights of the conference pointed to challenges which the IAALD Africa Chapter will hope to work towards:

  • Connectivity is still an issue for many parts of Africa making information and knowledge sharing limited.
  • Capacity of practitioners, policymakers, academics and farmers need to be increased to incorporate knowledge sharing into their roles.
  • Content from the grassroots is lacking. More knowledge from the local levels needs to be fed to higher levels (policymaking)

Conference Objectives
The main objectives of the conference were:

  • To establish and launch an African Chapter of IAALD
  • To create a platform where agriculture information professionals, scientists and other stakeholders interested in African agricultural information for research development can interact and learn from each others' experiences
  • To exchange ideas and help develop the skills of African information managers in information handling and management to facilitate access to available vital resource.

Programme Theme
The main themes of the conference were to:

  • Build capacity in Agricultural Information Resources Management
  • Enable Policy for Agricultural Information Management
  • Narrow the Digital Divide
  • Share knowledge and Information Systems for Networking and Partnerships
  • Meet the Information Needs of Stakeholders
