Use
of Sustainable Livelihoods Approaches
Tackling
poverty through a SL approach.
Livelihood changes [outcomes] may result from:
1. Understanding the livelihood and vulnerability contexts
of people within two further communities in Nkandla in
terms of the "five capitals" in order that three focus communities
actively participate in the project.
2. Leaders within focus communities, identifying interventions
with a high probability of mitigating the impact of "HIV/AIDS"
on the livelihoods of these communities with respect to all
"five capitals".
3. Strengthening the social capital of focus communities
through clearer understanding of existing and historical institutions,
and agreement on how to support the development of representative,
democratic institutions that enable sustainable development
for the poor.
4. Focus communities being able to apply for resources to
improve their physical capital, in a way that develops
local entrepreneurial capacity.
5. Focus communities being better able to access financial
capital, through improved information flows, particularly
for improvements in their physical capital and the
establishment of local small-scale enterprises.
6. Stakeholders identifying opportunities to utilise the natural
capital of Nkandla to benefit poor people.
7. Working relationships being established amongst stakeholders
in public, private and civil society sectors regarding support
for sustainable livelihoods at Nkandla.
Oxfam to use livelihoods and vulnerability analytical
framework (LAVA) developed together with others e.g. Drought
Resilient Livelihoods initiative of the Disaster Mitigation
Project funded by DFID CHAD.
