Background and use of SL

The SLLPC approach reflects the dynamic nature of livelihoods strategies. It conceptualises sustainability in terms of the ability to successfully manage a continuous process the outcome of which cannot be fully predicted.

The Project aims to deliver material benefits and at the same time to enhance the ability of communities to manage their own
development by explicitly strengthening the following capacity domains:

  • Extent of participation in community based activities;
  • Quality of leadership in the community;
  • Existence and functional ability of organisations: formal, informal and traditional;
  • Understanding of problems and constraints faced and the ability to identify of underlying causes (asking why?);
  • Ability to mobilise resources;
  • External linkages and the role of external agents and;
  • Role in the management of Project activities
