Purpose

LMP is a research project to identify lessons about livelihood issues, which can be incorporated into ongoing development initiatives by DFID and CARE in Bangladesh and elsewhere. The more immediate purpose is to evaluate the effectiveness of the project interventions of SHABGE and GOINTERFISH and that this learning are applied by DFID and CARE for the benefit of poor people in rural Bangladesh.

Use of Sustainable Livelihoods Approaches

The Livelihood Monitoring Project (LMP) is a recent initiative of CARE/DFID to measure the impact of two CARE Bangladesh projects SHABGE (Strengthening Household Access to Bari Gardening) and GOINTERFISH (Greater Opportunities for Integrated Rice Fish) working in the Northwest and Southeast regions of Bangladesh. These projects cover almost a quarter of the country and work with over 722,000 poor and vulnerable men and women. The projects are focussed on improving household-level production systems: homestead vegetable production (SHABGE) and integrated rice-fish production (GOINTERFISH).

The project has used a Sustainable Livelihoods Framework for the design of indicators of impact.
