Livelihoods
of the Extreme Poor was a research study which aimed to better
understand the livelihood conditions, constraints and opportunities
of the very poorest people in Bangladesh. The intention was
to help PROSHIKA and other agencies, including Government
of Bangladesh, improve their programme delivery to the poorest.
The various studies applied a livelihoods approach in their

A considerable amount of research has been conducted on the
causes of poverty in Bangladesh. In recent years attention
has turned to improving understanding of the nature of `extreme
poverty', the poverty of the poorest of the poor.
Efforts
are being made by different national and international organisations,
as well as the Government of Bangladesh, to extend their programme
support to the extreme poor. The purpose of the LEP study
has been to contribute to PROSHIKA's efforts to improve the
delivery of their programmes to the poorest of the poor by
learning more about their livelihoods and the type of interventions
that might really make a difference to them and lift them
out of poverty. DFID has worked in partnership with PROSHIKA
in this programme.
LEP
sought to understand the livelihood conditions of the many
different extremely poor people living in Bangladesh by analyzing
their livelihood constraints and opportunities. It also tried
to understand how the coping strategies that the poorest use
in order to survive may be supported by some form of social
protection as a means to help them escape from poverty and,
importantly, to stay out of extreme poverty.
