Case Studies

Smallholder cotton farmers (India)

1. Introduction
This case study explores lessons learned from a fair-trade organic cotton cultivation project, set in rural Gujarat, India. While the project was successful in most of its objectives, the learning which has emerged through the process has both informed the next phase of the project, and suggested some broader implications for fair-trade agricultural projects generally.

The questions we set out to ask through this case study were as follows:

• To what extent can a trade-based agricultural diversification project, which seeks to combine the principles of fair trade and sustainable livelihoods, both impact on poverty reduction in the short to medium term, and pave the way for longer-term outcomes and gains?

Which of the core concepts of the SLA does this project best illustrate?

Core Concept
People centred
Holistic
Dynamic
Building on strengths
Macro-micro links
Sustainability
• What lessons have been learned that can inform future, similar initiatives?
