Stakeholder Analysis

A tool to understand the different perspectives and influence
of stakeholders on an initiative

 Background

Stakeholders are defined as individuals and organisations who are actively involved in a project, or whose interests may be positively or negatively affected as a result of project execution or successful project completion.

Stakeholder analysis refers to a range of methods for mapping and understanding the power, positions, and perspectives of the stakeholders who have an interest in, and/or are likely to be affected by, a particular initiative. It can be applied to different contexts, within projects, programmes and policy reform.

There are many different techniques which can be used (see guides below). The basic steps in all stakeholder analysis are:

1. Identify the key stakeholders and their interests in the activity
2. Assess the influence and importance of each of these stakeholders in the activity
