Community-Based Risk Screening Tool - Adaptation and Livelihoods (CRiSTAL)

This tool helps project planners integrate risk reduction and climate change adaptation into community-level projects.

 Background

Building on the First Phase of activity, Livelihoods and Climate Change has focused on the development of practical tools to facilitate the integration of risk reduction and climate adaptation into field projects. Specifically, the Project Partners have developed and field-tested a decision-support tool called CRISTAL (Community-based Risk Screening Tool - Adaptation & Livelihoods), which enables project planners and managers to:

  • Understand the links between local livelihoods and climate.
  • Assess a project's impact on livelihood resources important for climate adaptation.
  • Devise adjustments to improve a project's impact on these key livelihood resources.

Field tests of CRiSTAL were conducted in Mali, Tanzania, Nicaragua and Sri Lanka. Feedback from each of the tests allowed project partners to fine-tune CRiSTAL, rendering it more useful and usable for project managers interested in mainstreaming climate risk into their field work. Details of these tests are included below.

 CRiSTAL Field Test Reports

  • Mali field test report. Summarises the methodology and results from the first field test. CRiSTAL was tested on an IUCN project on decentralized flood forest management in the Inner Niger Delta. PDF
  • Tanzania field test report. This document summarises the results from an Intercooperation-supported sustainable livelihoods project in Dodoma, which seeks to promote new income-generating activities in rural households. PDF
  • Nicaragua field test report. CRiSTAL in Nicaragua was tested on two projects—the IC project on sustainable hillside agriculture in northwestern Nicaragua, and an IUCN project on capacity-building for environmental management in the southeastern part of the country. PDF
  • Sri Lanka field test report. CRiSTAL Sri Lanka was tested on an IUCN integrated coastal ecosystem management project in the southwest region of the country. PDF
