IIED Rural Urban Programme

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is an independent, non-profit organization promoting sustainable patterns of world development through collaborative research, policy studies, networking and knowledge dissemination.

The Rural Urban programme seeks to improve understanding of how changing rural-urban interactions affect the livelihoods of low-income and vulnerable groups in urban and rural settlements. It aims to support local institutions and government to identify opportunities and constraints for poverty reduction and regional development provided by rural-urban linkages, and act on them.

Rural Urban Projects include:

  • Rural-urban linkages in Tanzania: the role of two intermediate urban centres in the development of their surrounding regions
  • The importance of rural-urban linkages in South-East Nigeria
  • Opportunities and constraints in the peri-urban areas of Bamako and Mopti, Mali
  • Farmers’ Markets in Tamil Nadu
  • Rural-urban linkages in Vietnam and their role in poverty reduction and equitable regional growth
