The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED)
is an independent, non-profit organization promoting sustainable
patterns of world development through collaborative research,
policy studies, networking and knowledge dissemination.
IIED
has a number of research groups and programmes working on
livelihoods issues:
- The
Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Livelihoods
(SARL) Programme aims to support and promote rural development
based on sustainable agricultural and land management practices,
strong organisations and enterprises, and dynamic rural
economies. It seeks to identify the policies and practices
needed to foster forms of rural economic growth that are
socially inclusive and which protect diversity. See http://www.iied.org/NR/agbioliv/index.html
- Biodiversity
and Livelihoods Group (BLG) aims to find ways to
yield more sustainable livelihood opportunities out of biodiversity
for the poor. A key issue is to understand: who gains most
from which elements of biodiversity, at what cost, to whom
and with what short and long term consequences? See http://www.iied.org/NR/agbioliv/bio_liv_themes/past.html
- The
Forestry and Land Use (FLU) programme has
the goal of improving people's livelihoods from forest and
land use on the basis of equity, efficiency and sustainability. The
programme works with communities, government, private sector
and NGOs, but also aims to evaluate and shape northern institutions,
values and processes which impact on southern partners.
See: http://www.iied.org/NR/forestry/index.html.
- Rural
Urban Linkages programme seeks to improve understanding
of how changing rural-urban interactions affect the livelihoods
of low-income and vulnerable groups in urban and rural settlements.
It aims to support local institutions and government to
identify opportunities and constraints for poverty reduction
and regional development provided by rural-urban linkages,
and act on them. See: http://www.iied.org/HS/themes/ru.html
