The Institute
of Development Studies (IDS) links its livelihoods work
to ongoing research, training and consultancy work carried out
by its poverty, environment, governance and participation groups.
Early work on SL at IDS focused on the development of a conceptual
framework for understanding livelihoods. This was used in detailed
research in Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Mali, and formed the basis
for the DFID SL framework.
Within
its livelihoods programme, on which much of DFID's early livelihoods
thinking was based, IDS has:
- focused
on the role played by institutions, policies and organisations;
- concentrated
on processes of agricultural intensification, crop-livestock
integration, livelihood diversification and migration;
- developed
strong links with partner organisations in Ethiopia, Mali,
Zimbabwe, Bangladesh; and
- amassed
considerable research experience with methods for understanding
livelihoods.
IDS has a strong information
department producing a variety of development knowledge
sharing services, including Livelihoods Connect.
