The
Fuel Substitution Project, funded by DFID, focused
on how the shift from traditional wood based fuels to cleaner
fuels such as gas and electricity can impact on peoples' livelihoods.
Such a shift can have positive impacts on health, the environment
and can widen access to energy services, but may also present
a risk to the livelihoods of those involved in supplying and
marketing traditional fuels - often the urban poor.
The
project incorporated the principles of a sustainable livelihoods
approach and focused on the household and SME level in the
urban areas of Nairobi, Kampala and Addis Ababa. It used SLA
to examine the potential impacts of fuel substitution on biomass
suppliers, focusing on people whose livelihoods are involved
in transportation and sales of biomass fuels. The project
also examined the alternative options available to mitigate
the impacts of traditional fuels, such as agro-forestry to
boost the supply of biomass fuels, and their costs and benefits.
