  Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)

FAO leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information.

The FAO have been active in sharing lessons from the implementation of the sustainable livelihoods approach. Key resources have been developed by various departments and programmes, some which are still ongoing and some of which have ended.   • e-agriculture.org - a NEW global initiative to enhance sustainable agricultural development and food security by improving the use of information, communication, and associated technologies in the sector.
  • Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (SARD) - Initiative aims to achieve concrete and measurable improvements in the livelihoods and living conditions of the rural poor and the sustainability of their environments over the next 5 years.
  • Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development in Mountain Regions (SARD-M) - This project aims to facilitate the design and implementation of new policy packages for sustainable agriculture and rural development in mountain regions.
  • Pro-Poor Livestock Initiative - Facilitates and supports the formulation and implementation of livestock-related policies and institutional changes that have a positive impact on the world’s poor.
  • The Food Security Analysis Unit (FSAU) provides comprehensive and in-depth information and analysis on the food security situation and nutrition status of people living in Somalia.

Participation. Working Group on Participatory Approaches and Methods to Support Sustainable Livelihoods and Food Security (IWG-PA). One of the key objectives of the working group was to capitalise on FAO's most successful normative and field experiences with participatory approaches and methods through their adaptation, replication and dissemination, in order to enhance FAO's field programme.  An online course, library of resources and tools are available. Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (SARD) - Policy Brief series is now available online. HTML NEW
Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development in Mountain Regions (SARD-M) - The SARD-M project liaises between Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (SARD) and Mountain issues. The project recalls the importance of these issues - both discussed at the Rio Conference in 1992 - and identifies the many challenges of Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development in mountain regions, and calls for coherent policies, instruments and programmes. Launched in 2005, this project will run until the end of 2009. HTML
  Pro-Poor Livestock Initiative - The project comprises four thematic areas: the role of livestock in the household, community, and national economies; the political economy of national and international livestock sector-related policy making; markets and standards for livestock and livestock products and how they affect the poor and livestock services and their role in assisting livestock keepers to enhance the returns they obtain from one of their principal assets. This project was launched in 2001 and is on going.
The Food Security Analysis Unit (FSAU) - through a network of experienced and qualified Somali monitors, FSAU has been using the SCF-UK Household Economy Analysis to analyse food insecurity. Reports Available HTML
Sustainable Development Department - A range of case studies and lessons available. No longer active HTML
Bridging the Rural Digital Divide (BRDD) - highlights how livelihoods approaches are used for information communications for development. This is now evolved into the e-agricutulre global initiative.
FAO Livelihoods Support Programme (LSP) - The programme purpose was to enable the FAO field and regular programmes to be more effective in applying sustainable livelihoods approaches. Numerous working papers are available. HTML No longer active.
