The
World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)
is a coalition of 175 international companies united by a
shared commitment to sustainable development via the three
pillars of economic growth, ecological balance and social
progress.
The
WBCSD's mission is to provide business leadership as a catalyst
for change toward sustainable development, and to promote
the role of eco-efficiency, innovation and corporate social
responsibility. Its activities reflect the belief that the
pursuit of sustainable development is good for business and
business is good for sustainable development.
One
of the focus activities of WBCSD is on Sustainable Livelihoods.
Many business leaders agree that fair access to opportunity
in the marketplace is essential to mitigating poverty in the
developing world. Not readily apparent, however, is how to
go about creating the conditions to allow companies to invest
and grow in these markets. In this project WBCSD seeks ways
by which business can extend the benefits of the markets to
serve people, address their needs and allow companies to develop
their business sustainably and profitably.
