The
Sustainable Fisheries Livelihoods Programme (SFLP) is
a regional
development project which aims to reduce poverty in coastal
and inland fisheries communities through the sustainable improvement
of their livelihoods. It's primary objectives include: development
of the communities' social capital, enhancement of their natural
assets and the development of appropriate fisheries policy
and institutional environments. The programme approach uses
SLAs in conjunction with the Code of Conduct for Responsible
Fisheries (CCRF).
The SFLP represents a partnership between the Department for
International Development (DFID), the Food and Agriculture
Organisation of the UN (FAO) and 25 participating countries
in West Africa. The programme, which started in 1999, is financed
by DFID for a period of 7 years, and is executed by the FAO.
