In
2000 the Policy Research Programme (PRP) reoriented its focus
from a concentration on natural resources management issues
to wider issues of livelihood sustainability and policy. The
new purpose of the PRP became the development of policy options
to improve the livelihoods of the rural poor.
The
outputs of the research were targeted at delivering:
i. Policy options to improve access to "capital assets"
(natural, social, human, physical and financial) for the rural
poor
ii. Policy reform options to reduce the vulnerability of the
rural poor
Four
major research projects were commissioned which focused upon
specific issues and regions within the programme. The four
research projects were managed by IDS, Khanya -MRC, ODG, ODI
and the University of York. In addition, other related projects
were funded under the PRP at a later date . Two relevant projects
are included here - Khanya -MRC , and IMM.
With
the programme completed, six themes emerged that cut
across all the projects. Click below to learn more about each
theme and its related research papers or access full descriptions
