Pro-Poor
Tourism (PPT) is tourism that results in increased net
benefits for poor people. This website provides a background
to and up-to-date information on the 'Practical strategies
for pro-poor tourism' project.
The
site sets out to demonstrate how PPT enhances the linkages
between tourism businesses and poor people, so that tourism's
contribution to poverty reduction is increased and poor people
are able to participate more effectively in product development.
Some of Pro-Poor Tourism's principles cohere with SL
principles, in that they:
- Focus
on expanding benefits, not just minimising costs to the
poor;
- Draw
on lessons from other sectors (such as small enterprise,
good governance, and poverty analysis) and apply these to
tourism;
- Learn
by doing the effectiveness of pro-poor strategies
is not proven, but we won't know what can be done to reduce
poverty through tourism until more concerted efforts are
made
- Recognise
that a range of strategies are needed to promote pro-poor
tourism, at the local destination, national/policy level,
and the international level.
The
website has been created by the Pro-Poor Tourism Partnership,
a collaborative research initiative between the International
Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT), IIED,
and ODI, and the project
is funded by DFID.
