  One World Action

One World Action is working to create the power and opportunity for the poorest citizens to transform their own lives, and to challenge the international policies that make and keep people poor.

One World Action works at two levels - at the programme level through partners in developing countries ; and influencing relevant policy in the UK and Europe.

Programme Work
Working with around 30 partners in Africa, South and South-East Asia and Central America, the overriding aim is to strengthen local institutions and give people a say in the decisions that shape their lives.

Partners are active in a range of areas including:

  • strengthening citizens' skills to engage with government and political structures
  • improving women's access to justice
  • HIV/AIDs
  • providing basic services, such as healthcare, water, sanitation, rubblish collection
  • advocacy on rights, transparency, accountability, service provision, economic policy, trade and aid

Policy Change

The Policy Change programme influences policy discussions at the UK and European Union levels by informing policy-makers of the views and experiences of partners, holding seminars and organising lobby visits for partners. A range of themes are focused upon including : democracy; governance; rights; women's rights and gender equality; basic services ; disability ; trade.

One World Action's livelihoods work includes the following projects:

  • A partner, Development Workshop (DW) is implementing a micro-credit programme, the Sustainable Livelihoods Programme, in Angola as part of a larger programme called LUPP (Luanda Urban Poverty Programme). One of its main outputs is to increase livelihood security for women, men and children through the development, evaluation and expansion of sustainable livelihood options (credit, savings, co-operatives, informal social safety nets and non-financial services).
  • In the Philippines, the SIMCARD project aims to enhance food security for fishermen and increase their income. Also the Community Livestock programme, set up by our partner, BUILDER, aims to increase crop production and improve food security for three farming communities in Central Philippines.
