The overarching objective of Irish Aid is the reduction of poverty, inequality and exclusion in developing countries. All of Irish Aid's policies and activities are measured against their contribution to the reduction of poverty and against the progress they achieve towards the development targets set by the international community.
IrishAid works with 8 partner countries and provides substantial and predictable funding directly to government-run projects and programmes. These countries comprise Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Timor Leste and Vietnam. Bilateral aid is also provided to projects in other developing countries. The specialist fields included HIV/AIDS, health, education, gender and the environment.
Irish Aid also plays an increasing role in emergency response and recovery sectors and spends approximately EUR 150 millon on this area (largely outside of the programme countries mentioned above).
