DiMP
is located at the University of Cape Town
(Department of Environmental and Geographical Sciences), Cape
Town, South Africa. The programme aims to promote disaster
mitigation as one strategy for sustainable development. It
encourages the integration of disaster mitigation strategies
within development programmes in vulnerable communities.
DiMP
carries out its mission in three principal areas:
- Promoting
disaster risk science through applied research
- Reducing
disaster vulnerability through training and education
- Informing
disaster reduction policy through advocacy and publications
In
1997 DiMP established Periperi, the Southern African Risk
Reduction Network, also hosted on the DiMP website. Periperi
provides an oppotunity for a diverse range of organisations
to work together across disciplines and national borders.
Its members belong to non-governmental organisations, universities
and government departments across southern Africa. |
