Bridging the Rural Digital Divide (BRDD)

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), governments, and other international agencies implemented a strategic Programme entitled Bridging the Rural Digital Divide (BRDD). This programme is now closed.

The programme highlights innovative approaches to knowledge exchange that take advantage of new digital technologies, and that are based on synergies between information management and communication for development. The conceptual basis for the programme has drawn particularly on Livelihoods Approaches.

The programme brings relevant expertise and resources from across the international development community into a more coherent and systematic approach. Innovators in many parts of the world are already developing initiatives which, if brought together, will have greater potential than if they remain isolated or fragmented.

The programme objectives are:

  • to increase the availability of information content related to rural areas in digital form.
  • to develop innovative mechanisms and processes for information exchange and communication; and
  • to establish networks and communities of practice in information and communication for development and for exchange of information on agriculture and rural development.

FAO now supports e-agriculture.org - a NEW global initiative to enhance sustainable agricultural development and food security by improving the use of information, communication, and associated technologies in the sector.
