The
Centre for Sustainable Livelihoods, University College Cork
is a multi-disciplinary centre dedicated to pursuing excellence
in the areas of agriculture, rural development, natural resource
management and sustainable livelihoods research and education.
As well as education and research, the Centre's role encompasses
training in development related activities and project implementation,
especially in areas related to sustainable livelihoods.
These activities are undertaken in both the South and in the
North and they bring together development researchers, policy
makers and practitioners. The Centre places a strong
emphasis on interdisciplinary research, drawing on specialists
from the social and biological sciences.
The Centre has developed significant interdisciplinary PhD and MSc research programmes. These have included the fields of food science, human nutrition, geography, politics, education, agriculture, economics, sociology, anthropology, and others. The Centre encourages networking between public and private action, between the economically rich countries and the disadvantaged in the Majority World. While many of the Centre’s activities involve North – South collaboration, it also promotes South – South collaboration and is active in North – North collaborations. The Centre is a member of many international networks, with partners within the developing and developed countries.
