Livelihoods and Peacebuilding Programme Manager

Background

Mercy Corps has been working in Darfur, Sudan since 2004, in close collaboration with other INGOs and UN agencies to provide emergency assistance to vulnerable populations in the form of water and sanitation services, non-food item distribution, shelter, education, training and protection assistance. Mercy Corps will increasingly incorporate livelihoods support and peace-building activities, targeting non-displaced as well as displaced communities.

Job Summary

The Darfur Livelihoods Program Manager will lead the development and implementation of Mercy Corps’ livelihoods and peace-building activities in Darfur. These activities will include a range of interventions aimed at improving the conditions of beneficiary populations, including displaced (IDPs), rural non-displaced, and pastoralist communities. Priority will be placed on activities that provide IDPs skills and inputs transferable upon eventual return, and which help to build and restore confidence and mutually beneficial economic and social interaction between diverse conflict-affected communities. The Darfur Livelihoods Program Manager will also work closely with other Mercy Corps program staff to ensure that programs in all sectors are implemented in an integrated and context-appropriate manner that contributes to peaceful inter-community contact and in accordance with 'Do No Harm' principles.

Key Requirements

  • BA/BSc (MA/MSc strongly preferred) in relevant field such as agriculture, development studies, anthropology, etc.
  • 2 years’ experience in remote field postings, working with displaced communities and pastoralists.
  • Proven success managing cooperative development and livelihoods strengthening programs through community mobilization and participatory approaches.
  • Academic/practical experience with peace building, conflict mapping and rural development.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to conflict environments.
  • Experience managing the development, implementation, administration and compliance of US Government, UN, private foundation and corporate grants, and related programs.
  • Demonstrated ability and desire to train and build capacity of national staff.
  • Excellent computer and communication skills.
  • Arabic language skills preferred.
