Background

The Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit (AREU) is an independent research organisation based in Kabul. AREU's mission is to conduct high-quality research that informs and influences policy and practice. Their Livelihoods and Human Security research programme aims to contribute to the understanding of risk management strategies at individual, household and group
levels, in order to inform the development of policies to reduce human insecurity.
There is a large focus on vulnerability, how Afghans make a livng and the range of livelihoods options open to them.

Responsibilities

  • Designing and planning the livelihoods and human security research programme.
  • Defining the programme’s scope and direction, and developing the conceptual and methodological frameworks for proposed studies.
  • Conducting and supervising research and other programme-related activities, including conducting data collection and supervising data analysis.
  • Writing-up results for publication in collaboration with research team
    members.
  • Supervising and mentoring Research Assistants and other staff, when in and out of the field, and ensuring that they have adequate support.
  • Performing job appraisals of Research Assistants and Research Officers.
  • Preparing narrative reports and other documents for donors.
  • Leading or participating in other Research Department activities, such as seminars, briefings and study groups.
  • Liaising with key actors (e.g., government, UN, NGOs, academics)
  • Making presentations on AREU livelihoods and human security research findings.

Key Requirements

  • Ph.D. in a field related to human security or livelihoods (i.e. development studies, anthropology, sociology, geography).
  • Strong research skills, particularly using qualitative methodologies, preferably in terms of both design and implementation.
  • Experience conducting field research in a developing country.
  • Publication record in academic peer reviewed journals.
  • Strong writing skills in English, including narrative reports and proposals.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills.
  • Evidence of good mentoring, training, and supervision skills.
