Background |
|
Mercy
Corps has been operating in North Kivu Province
in the Democratic Republic of Congo since mid-2007. They plan
to implement an Emergency WASH program for
internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Nyanzale area of
North Kivu Province. Mercy Corps' integrated program will
improve the overall health environment of internally
displaced persons and their hosts by delivering an
adequate supply of water, improved sanitation and access to
hygiene promotion.
Job Functions
- Conduct
community assessments and make recommendations
about the needs and vulnerabilities of
targeted populations in regard to water, sanitation and
hygiene issues.
- Work
collaboratively to implement Mercy Corps' emergency
response for water, sanitation and hygiene promotion
project, including new proposal development.
- Ensure
that the project engages local stakeholders
and develops local capacity for longer
term sustainability.
- Recruit,
mentor and manage staff. Mentor the community WASH
committees.
- Develop
and maintain working relationships and coordinate
with relevant international and local agencies active
in the water and sanitation sector of an emergency response,
as well as local authorities and associations.
- Integrate
public health concepts into engineering programs.
Good understanding of cholera outbreaks and epidemics' dynamics
and solutions.
- Conduct
regular monitoring of project activities and project impact,
in accordance with existing Mercy Corps Design, Monitoring,
and Evaluation guidelines.
Key Requirements
- BSc
or Master's Degree in Civil Engineering, Water
Resources Management, Water Treatment Technologies or related
field.

Demonstrated expertise in Water, Sanitation, and
Hygiene Promotion implementation, with at least
3-5 years of relevant project management experience.

Commitment to local capacity building and
the ability to engage local stakeholders in
project design and implementation.

Experience working with host governments, INGOs and national
NGOs and familiarity with international humanitarian
operations, coordination structures, and the mandates
of UN agencies, Red Cross organizations, and other NGOs.

Good organisational and project management skills
and the ability to anticipate project needs.

Proven ability to work cooperatively with others
in a team environment, and to lead a diverse group
of national and international staff.

Understanding of participatory methodologies for
project design, implementation and evaluation.

Knowledge of humanitarian standards and codes, including
SPHERE and WHO.

Working understanding of procurement systems.
